Commissions

I take on a small number of commissions each year — whatever you have in mind, I would love to hear about it and help any way I can.

How it works

The first step is to email me at hello@harryphelps.art with a description of what you're after. It's okay if it is not fully formed yet — we can work together to refine the idea without charge. There is no commitment at this stage. In your email, please include as much of the following information as possible:

The next step is arrange a call to go over it.

Once we’ve agreed the details, I’ll give you a quote (see below for pricing guidance) and an estimated timeframe and then it's up to you if you would like to accept.

If you decide to go ahead, I will ask for a 50% deposit before starting work. The first step is usually to create a smaller painted colour study to work out the composition and colours. I'll share this with you for feedback before starting the final piece. It's important to note that the study is not the final piece, it's just a chance for me to work out the composition and colours and to make sure we're on the same page.

Once the study is approved, I will start work on the final piece. You can choose if you would like to see progress photos along the way, or if you would prefer to wait until the piece is finished. Once finished, I will send you photos for approval. If you're happy with it, I will ask for the remaining balance before shipping the piece to you.

Pricing

All my works are priced according to the linear inch (height + width) of the piece. This means that a 12x12" piece is 24 linear inches, and a 24x36" piece is 60 linear inches. For my paintings, the price is £4 per linear inch. So a 12x12" piece would be £96, and a 24x36" piece would be £240. For a commissioned piece, there is an additional fee of £100 to cover the time spent on the study and any additional work required to complete the piece.

Style

I am a plein air colourist at heart, so my jam is painting outdoors from life and capturing the light key and atmosphere. For commissions generally working outdoors is not possible so I generally work from reference photos. It's super important that these photos are of a high quality. I primarily work with oils, but am happy to have a go at other mediums if you have something specific in mind, and I'll be honest if I think you might be better off with another artist. Get in touch and we can chat about it, I'm always happy to offer advice.
